Types of Ants
Argentine Ants

When inside: they nest near a, moisture source such as water pipes, sinks, potted plants, etc.

When outside: live in shallow nests located in moist situations such as under boards and stones, beneath plants, along sidewalks, etc.

Invade buildings when outside conditions are too wet or too dry
Carpenter Ants

Build little tunnels and set up camp inside your walls-threatens integrity of wood by hollowing it out

May find fungal growths in wood from ant colony’s waste dump

Typically enter around door and window frames, eaves, plumbing and utility lines, and shrub and tree branches in contact with the building
Little Black Ants

When inside: nests located in woodwork, decaying wood, and masonry.

Feed on grease, oil, meats, fruits, vegetable materials such as corn meal, and sweets
-
When outside: nest under stones/rocks, in rotting logs, in lawns, or in open areas
-
Feed on other insects, honeydew, and plant secretions
-
Commonly seen on foundation walls and along sidewalks outside
Odorous House Ants

When inside: construct nests in wall voids especially around hot water pipes and heaters, in crevices around sinks, cupboards, etc.

Prefer to feed on sweets but also eat foods with high protein content and grease such as meats and cheese

When outside: found in the nest of larger ants, in exposed soil, but mostly under objects
-
Prefer honeydew and honeydew secretions

Usually enter homes when there is limited honeydew, or heavy rainfall
-
When inside: nest in walls, in insulation, and under floors, near heat source in winter
-
When outside: nest under stones, in cracks in pavement, next to buildings
-
Enter buildings through cracks in the slab and walls, slab expansion joints, and natural openings of buildings

Not aggressive, but workers can bite and sting
-
Will feed on almost anything but prefer meats and grease
